Clay J. Cockerell, MD, MBA, JD


Dr. Clay J. Cockerell is a board-certified dermatologist and dermatopathologist internationally recognized for his leadership in medical education, clinical excellence, and laboratory innovation. He is the Founder and Medical Director of Cockerell Dermatopathology in Dallas, Texas, and serves as Program Director of the Lake Granbury Dermatology Residency Program through Health Education Services and Lake Granbury Medical Center.

A graduate of Baylor College of Medicine, Dr. Cockerell completed his dermatology residency and dermatopathology fellowship at New York University Medical Center, where he was Chief Resident in Dermatology. Returning to Texas, he built one of the nation’s premier dermatopathology training programs at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, serving as Director of the Division of Dermatopathology for more than twenty-five years. Over his career, he has trained more than 200 fellows and residents who now practice and teach around the world.

Dr. Cockerell has authored or co-authored nearly 1,000 scientific publications and book chapters spanning dermatopathology, inflammatory and neoplastic skin disease, and medical education. A past president of the American Academy of Dermatology, he has also served in leadership roles in numerous state, national, and international organizations.

In addition to his medical accomplishments, Dr. Cockerell holds an MBA from the Jack Welch Management Institute, a Master’s degree in Commercial Real Estate from Georgetown University, and a Juris Doctor from Abraham Lincoln University, reflecting his broad commitment to excellence, innovation, and mentorship in academic medicine.
